Take the opportunity to share an end-of-the-year meal with other Wolfe Walkers at our long-time holiday venue, Pete’s Tavern. See the table where O. Henry wrote his beloved Christmas classic, “The Gift of the Magi.” In addition to the pleasurable meal and the friendly camaraderie of being with fellow Wolfe Walkers, Justin will present an enlightening new slide show: “The Woolworth Building: The Cathedral of Commerce.”

The Woolworth Building: The Cathedral of Commerce

Discover the legends, lore, and delights of the ever-impressive Woolworth Building with noted Tour Leader Justin Ferate. This neo-Gothic tower, designed by architect Cass Gilbert in 1913, is one of the oldest and most beloved skyscrapers in the United States. After more than a century, the building remains one of the fifty tallest in the nation. Created expressly for Frank Woolworth, the founder of the “Five and Ten Cent Store,” the Woolworth Building was constructed as the world’s tallest building, costing thirteen and a half million dollars – all paid in cash. (Perhaps in nickels and dimes?)

On the night of the building’s dedication – April 24, 1913 – President Wilson pressed a button in the White House in Washington, DC and 80,000 electric lights in the Woolworth Building immediately flashed on in New York City. At the dedication noted radio minister S. Parkes Cadman dedicated the building as, “The Cathedral of Commerce.”

Discover the mosaic ceilings, the handsome carvings, the grand murals, and the main office with its Napoleonic grandeur – marble-clad walls, period French furniture, and an enormous portrait of Napoleon, the role model for Frank Woolworth. Learn about the humorous “gargoyles” depicting the architect, the engineer, and even Mr. Woolworth himself!
