ALONG THE CROTON AQUEDUCT: AQUEDUCT MUSEUM & WEIR CHAMBER plus DOBBS FERRY HISTORIC HOUSE TOUR
Join Justin Ferate when we travel up the Hudson River by train to the village of Ossining. During the day, we’ll stroll along different sections of the Old Croton Aqueduct Trailway, which follows the route of the water tunnel that supplied water to New York City from 1842 to 1955. The disused tunnel remains, but above it is a popular New York State Park: a wooded hiking, biking and walking trail that snakes 26 miles from the Croton Dam to the Bronx line.
Upon our arrival at Ossining, we’ll walk along a brief segment of the Old Croton Aqueduct Trailway to our first destination: The Old Croton Aqueduct Museum. Here, we’ll view a film about the history of the Old Croton Aqueduct, which was designed by the same man who designed Brooklyn’s Green-Wood Cemetery: David Bates Douglass. As an extra “bonus,” we’ll view an exhibition on the Sing Sing Prison – complete with prison cells and other prison accoutrements. The Sing Sing Prison exhibition is cleverly entitled, "Up the River” and the exhibition about the Old Croton Aqueduct is called "Down the River."
We’ll meet with Mavis Cain of the Friends of the Old Croton Aqueduct, who will take us down into the Weir Chamber of the Croton Aqueduct. We’ll view the interior of the huge brick tunnel that is the actual aqueduct. Along the trail, we’ll also view the nearby impressive stone "Double Arched Bridges."
Then, back on the train again to the village of Irvington, where we’ll stop for our picnic lunches along the waterfront. We’ll explore a bit of the charming town of Irvington, named for its legendary “writer in residence,” Washington Irving – and then stroll along the romantic Croton Aqueduct to Dobbs Ferry. En route, we’ll view such Hudson River mansions as Nevis, the Georgian Revival home of Alexander Hamilton’s son and the ever delightful, bright pink Armour-Stiner Octagon House.
The highlight of the day may just be the Dobbs Ferry Historical Society House Tour. Here, we will view the interiors of five historic village homes. We’ll also have the opportunity to view the Keeper’s House, which once the home of the principal superintendent of the Aqueduct, north of New York City. This classic, brick Italianate 1845 house is the sole surviving Keeper’s House. The house has not been occupied since 1962, but it will soon be converted into a Visitor & Education Center for the Old Croton Aqueduct Trailway.
